Tag suggestions while typing in the topic composer.

What it does

  • Focus the tags field of the new/edit topic form and the most used tags appear, with their topic counts.
  • Type and the menu narrows to tags that contain the typed word; the count stays visible.
  • Click a suggestion or press Enter/Tab to insert it. The current word is replaced and the caret is left ready for the next tag; commas and the five-tag limit are handled for you.
  • Keyboard: ArrowDown/ArrowUp move, Enter or Tab picks, Escape closes. The field keeps working as a plain text input without JavaScript.
  • The menu excludes tags the topic already has and closes when five tags are used.

Settings

Admin → Plugins → Tags

  • Suggest tags while typing — default on. Off removes the menu and the /api/tags endpoint.
  • Suggestions shown — 3 to 10, default 6.

Notes

  • No tables. One indexed read of fb_tags per suggestion request, ordered by topic_count.
  • Suggestions are only a shortcut: any tag can still be typed by hand, and the server applies the same normalisation as before.
  • The menu labels come from the site language; the text uses theme variables in light and dark mode.
